11 OCT 2009

After playing the UW Memorial Union Terrace on August 6 the Cork 'n Bottle String Band found themselves without a gig for the first time in 13 years. This unprecedented and unplanned hiatus led to several developments: the band placed 2nd in the Isthmus Annual Manual Favorite Folk Band category (once again eliciting the response "who votes for us?"), one of the band members got married, Brett Favre joined the band on maracas and washboard then promptly quit when he got a better offer, and, we managed to learn a few new songs.

To celebrate the learning of new songs our management team suggested that a few public performances would go a long way towards tightening up the tunes and would also look good on our college applications. There is hope that these shows will also raise enough money to purchase beer for band practice.

Wednesday, October 14, 6-8 PM, High Noon Saloon. $4 ($4 cover charge was suggested by Favre and deemed a good idea. We can't say his brief stint in the band was a total loss)

Sunday, October 18, 2-6 PM, High Noon Saloon. $10 suggested donation at the door. The Dirty Shirts will also be playing this show and there is the possibility of other bands or musicians as well. The show is a benefit to raise money for a friend with cancer. There may be more details to add as the show gets closer.

Thursday, November 5, 6-8 PM, The Frequency. $4. There is nothing clever or interesting to say about this show other then if you come you will be amazed and forever changed.

Cork 'n Bottle String Band ***13 Year Party*** aka "A Baker's Dozen of Years of Beer"
with Special Guests: The Oak St. Ramblers

6:00 pm, Saturday, May 23, 2009 - High Noon Saloon

The following has been pieced together from various Wikipedia entries, Cork 'n Bottle String Band, LLC offer no guarantee of accuracy or authenticity. Our attorney repeatedly advised us to not send this out but our interns put so much time into it we felt it would crush their spirits if we were to delete it before members of the Bluegrass Press Corps were able to peruse it.

While historians debate the exact details of the early days of the Cork 'n Bottle String Band there is general agreement about the basic facts. In May of 1996 the Cork 'n Bottle String Band took their ragtag style of bluegrass music from the basement of the Cork 'n Bottle Liquor store to the stage of Ken's Bar on South Butler Street in Madison, Wisconsin. The band played every Wednesday night at Ken's Bar for 5 or 6 years until it closed, but details of these shows have been lost or intentionally obfuscated for reasons unknown or not understood.

The only records of this time period were crude drawings and scratches on the walls of the basement at Ken's Bar and those disappeared when the bar was torn down in the early part of the 21st century. At one point historical excavators found what they thought was the Rosetta Stone of South Butler Street but after careful analysis and radiocarbon dating it was determined that it was merely a Jim Beam bottle with the recipe for a "Beam & Coke" written on the label. Further analysis revealed it to contain three cigarette butts, specifically, the filters of Marlboro Medium brand smokes.

After Ken's Bar closed the band embarked on the Homeless Tour which had them playing month long residencies at various Madison venues. Shortly after the Homeless Tour the Memorial Union at the University of Wisconsin in Madison hired the group for weekly concerts, shifting their traditional Wednesday night appearances to a Thursday slot so they would have the honor of opening up for "open mic". By all accounts the band was ecstatic to receive such a prestigious offer. In recent months the band has been appearing at the Memorial Union monthly, always on the first Thursday of the month.

Now, 13 years after their original appearance at Ken's Bar, the Cork 'n Bottle String Band will be celebrating their longevity with a rare Saturday evening performance at The High Noon Saloon in Madison, Wisconsin. Joining the group will be Chicagoland exiles The Oak Street Ramblers. Cork 'n Bottle String Band offer no information on The Oak Street Ramblers other than they seem like decent folks.

***Cork 'n Bottle String Band***
-----A brief history and update for the fall of 2008-----

Some of you may recall that after several years of playing every Wednesday evening at Ken's Bar the Cork 'n Bottle String Band was forced to embark on the "Homeless Tour" when Ken's was sold and closed for remodeling (a project that inexplicably continues to this day). The group played at a series of venues before settling into a weekly spot at the UW Memorial Union Rathskeller and Terrace which lasted until this past summer when the Union reduced the groups appearances to once per month.

This change has prompted the group to add shows at local venues and in October we will be trying out Madison's newest addition to the music scene, The Frequency at 121 W. Main Street. This location has been a few different venues over the past few years but is probably best remembered as The Slipper Club. As of this writing we have not been told if we will have access to the old costumes used at The Slipper Club burlesque shows but we hope to spice up our show one way or another.

The Frequency is a small venue and reminds us of our times at Ken's Bar although not quite that small and without the cigarette smoke. There is a bar in the front room and the club opens up in the back where the stage is located. The venue takes the cover charge at the entrance to the back room so the merely curious can sit at the front bar and down shots of schnapps while they wrestle with the decision to plunk down $3 to see a 6 piece acoustic string band.

As this is a new venue for us we would appreciate everybody helping us to get the word out on the street. Please forward this email to interested parties or start a blog or just stand on the street and mumble about it to yourself. Untold rewards await you.

Thursday, October 30, 6:00-8:00 - UW Memorial Union Terrace/Rathskellar

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 6-8 PM, The Frequency, 121 W. Main St, Madison
Thursday, Nov. 20, 6-8 PM, UW Memorial Union Rathskeller

Thursday, Dec. 11, 6-8 PM, The Frequency, 121 W. Main St, Madison
Thursday, Dec. 18, 6-8 PM, UW Memorial Union Rathskeller

Thank you for your attention. Don't ever forget that we love you but if you feel the need to spout off you can reach the band here.

Get out your sharpie and write this on the screen of your favorite blackberry:

Thursday, September 25, 6:00-8:00 - UW Memorial Union Terrace/Rathskellar

Saturday, September 27, 7:30 - Stoughton Opera House, with John Fabke and the Lonesome Aces

Thursday, October 2, 6:00-8:00 - The Frequency 121 W. Main St, Madison
Thursday, October 16, 6:00-8:00 - The Frequency 121 W. Main St, Madison

Thursday, October 30, 6:00-8:00 - UW Memorial Union Terrace/Rathskellar

The Stoughton Opera House originally opened in 1901 and in recent years
has been restored to host another 100 years of performances.
Cork 'n Bottle String Band was the last band to play there before it
was closed for remodeling and repairs in 1999 (?). We're not sure when
we actually played there and our manager at the time disappeared into
South America several years ago so we can't ask him. This should be a
great show, the venue is top notch and we'll be splitting the bill with
The Lonesome Aces, a regional bluegrass band that plays John Fabke's
original songs in a traditional bluegrass style and will feature Bob
Black on banjo. Bob Black played banjo for Bill Monroe in the mid 70's
and was recently part of the Bluegrass Boys Reunion concert at the
Sugar Maple Traditional Music Festival.

As always, questions and complaints can be sent to
us here. Questions are likely to be ignored unless there is the potential for financial compensation.
Complaints are read aloud at our shows and are usually embellished for
maximum entertainment value.

Happy Labor Day,

Patrick Logterman on behalf of the Cork 'n Bottle String Band.

Cork n Bottle String Band - Home for the Holidays.
Thursday, Nov 22 - no show
Thursday, Nov 29 - UW Rathskeller 6-8 pm
Thursday, Dec 6 - UW Rathskeller 6-8 pm
Thursday, Dec 13 - UW Rathskeller 6-8 pm
Wednesday, Dec 19 - High Noon Saloon 5:30 $3
Wednesday, Jan 9 - High Noon Saloon 5:30 $3

CBSBs weekly show at the UW Rathskeller has a break for American Thanksgiving followed shortly by the normal semester break starting mid-December. No word yet on when the band will resume its weekly show at the Rathskeller but mid-January is the likely time. In the meantime, the band returns to the High Noon Saloon for two happy hour shows on the preferred day of Wednesday. Most historians regard the hundreds of Wednesday evenings shows the Cork n Bottle String held at Kens Bar as responsible for changing hump day into the start of the weekend. While the State Historical Society still refuses to commemorate this monumental event, the band feels that these upcoming happy hour shows will go a long way towards finally realizing the importance of this cultural shift.

As always, inquiries and complaints can be directed to us here.

God Bless em,

Bluegrass Shirley
